According to the agency Eph, Putin insisted that Russia acts in accordance with the UN Charter, which defends the right to self-determination of peoples. “It is the will of millions of people,” he said to applause, referring to the referendums held in the four Ukrainian regions, which have been condemned by the international community.
The leader of the Kremlin trusted that both chambers of the Russian Parliament will give their approval to the treaties that are signed this Friday in the coming days. Likewise, he affirmed that Russia is united with the inhabitants of Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson by “a common destiny and a millenary history”.
He lamented that these ties were threatened after the fall of the Soviet Union, which happened “despite the will of the people”, and that they will now be “Russian citizens forever”.
According to a report from RTPutin promised that Moscow will rebuild all cities and towns damaged by the fighting and develop businesses, infrastructure and health care systems. He also assured that the Russian authorities will do everything possible so that the residents of the new territories “feel the support of the entire Russian people.”
According to this same source, the president urged kyiv to re-establish peace negotiations, adding that the decision to join Russia has already been made by the people and that Moscow will not “betray” them.
“We call on the kyiv regime to immediately cease fire, all hostilities, the war it sparked in 2014, and return to the negotiating table. We are prepared for it. […] But we are not going to discuss the choice of the people in Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporozhie,” he said.
