They indicated what the amount of the increase would be if the initiative currently being discussed in Congress is approved.

There is great expectation in the country, since this Wednesday the Economic Commissions of the Congress of the Republic will carry out the debate on the controversial tax reform of the National Government, to which several political sectors have expressed their disagreement.

One of the issues that has gained relevance is the proposal to tax a 19% VAT on imports of goods made through digital platforms such as Temu, Alibaba, Amazon, Shein, among others. If the articles are approved, this would imply an increase in the cost of orders that do not exceed $200.
Currently, online shopping in the country has experienced great growth, since the products purchased on these platforms usually have relatively low prices. However, this panorama could change next year if the so-called Financing Law is approved.
It should be remembered that, in the economic commissions, a series of taxes were eliminated, such as VAT on games of luck and chance, on vehicles, and the increase in rates on occasional profits. However, new taxes arose that were not part of the original initiative, such as the VAT tax on purchases made on digital platforms.
According to Olga Lucía Velázquez, representative to the Chamber, who spoke on Blu Radio, this is not an article, but is included in current and derogatory provisions. The congresswoman explained that, according to the director of the DIAN, this measure would allow “to normalize and know exactly which imports are being made through means other than billing.”
According to the presentation made in Congress, one of the reasons behind this initiative is that these import modalities are being used to carry out irregular operations, which encourages smuggling practices that affect the economic balance of those who carry out ordinary imports.
