Punta Bergantín: firm steps towards a first-class tourist destination in the north of the Dominican Republic

Punta Bergantín: pasos firmes hacia un destino turístico de primer nivel en el norte de RD

The project Brigantine Pointlocated in the community of Villa Montellano, is making steady progress towards becoming a top-class tourist destination in the north of the Dominican Republic.

Andres Marranzini, Executive Director of Punta Bergantín, praised the importance of the initiative that will bring development not only to the “forgotten” community of some 35 thousand inhabitants, but to the entire country.

The project is being developed on approximately 10 million square meters with two components; a real estate tourism component and a hotel component. During his appearance at the Corripio Communications Group’s Weekly Luncheon, Marrranzini highlighted the support of foreign investment.

He cited, as an example, the opening last week of the international chain Hyatt Zilara hotel, which is the first in a series of tourist facilities that will make this part of the country’s geography one of the main attractions for local and foreign visitors.

The second property will begin construction next year. This is under an agreement between the chain Meliá Hotels International and the Puntacana Group. The estimated investment in the project would exceed 70 million dollars (64.5 million euros) and the opening is scheduled for 2026. It is projected as a five-star establishment with 300 rooms.

Elaborating on Punta Bergantín, Marranzini explained that in its first stage they will be incorporating some 2,100 rooms “which allows us to procure or implement a flight stimulation strategy that returns Puerto Plata to the volumes it once had of nearly 750,000 visitors by air.

Today it may be that, organically, it comes to close to 400,000 passengers through Gregorio Luperón International Airport.

In this context, he added that the strategy goes further, after indicating that the focus is to project the Cibao as a single destination.

“Punta Bergantín is the beach destination of Cibao; Santiago is the business, health and events destination. We are the complement in the hotel tourism component to this business visit,” he said.

Regarding the real estate tourism aspect, they will offer a closed product with a golf course, with various amenities for people who live in Santiago, La Vega and Mocawho have a second home in a gated resort with guaranteed security, access to the beach, clubs, tennis, racket sports, among other things, incorporated, of course, into an innovation center and the film industry, as a complement.

“I believe that we are facing a great opportunity for a region that has not received investment of the magnitude that we are working on for a long time,” he said.

Also present at the discussion were Francisco Elías, Senior Executive Vice President of Subsidiary Companies of Banco de Reservas; as well as project executives Leonela Vólquez, Director of Community and Sustainability; Gabriella Dipino, Financial Director; Luis Namnum, Director of Sales; and Elizabeth Rodríguez, Legal Director.

First Stage

The project includes in a first stage the construction 2,100 hotel rooms, 300 residences, 300 apartments, 2 beach clubs and two golf clubswith an estimated investment of 154 million dollars, guaranteeing water, electricity and other quality services, explained Marranzini.

“The Punta Bergantín project is probably the best opportunity for a community of some 35,000 people who worked and depended on the Montellano sugar mill at one time and who, as a result of its closure in 2000, remain stagnant and have not flourished. This activity is intended to incorporate them into that development, progress and the opportunities that can be generated for them.”

General information

In general terms, the Punta Bergantín project includes the commissioning of 4,000 hotel rooms; as well as 1,500 residential rooms; an academic campus intended to promote education and innovation; a film studio to be installed jointly with the international firm One Race Filmsa company chaired by actor Vin Diesel; and a modern 18-hole golf course.
