The magistrates of the San Román Criminal Collegiate Court handed down an effective sentence of 8 years and 3 months against Marisol Gonzales Ordóñez, who was prosecuted for the crime of aggravated illegal mining.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office reported that the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Environmental Matters, after an oral trial hearing, managed to prove criminal responsibility against Marisol Gonzales, who since 2018 had been carrying out mining activities in the riverbed and marginal strip of the Esquilaya River, tributary of the Inambari River, in the district of San Gabán, province of Carabaya.
They say that the now convicted woman used heavy machinery such as excavators, motors, motor pumps, among others, to carry out illegal mining activities that generated discharges of suspended solids into the Esquilaya River. They also caused the destruction of the riverbed, the relief, the surface of the area and the part of the natural forest.
The judges of the Criminal Collegiate Court also ordered the payment of 30 thousand soles in civil compensation, although the lawyer of the convicted woman filed an appeal.
