Puno: Government extends state of emergency for 30 days in the province of San Román

By Supreme Decree 079-2024-PCM, the Government extended the State of Emergency in the province of San Román (Puno), for a period of 30 days, starting on August 5. The regulation was published this Thursday in the newspaper El Peruano.

As you may recall, due to insecurity and high crime rates, On July 5, 2024, the Government declared a State of Emergency in the province of San Román (Juliaca) for 30 days in order to combat crime. This exceptional regime was extended for another 30 days.

The leader of the Señor de los Milagros urbanization in the district of San Miguel, Raúl Choque, was against this extension, as he said that during this period it was not clarified about him murder of the president of the Villa Hermosa del Misti urbanization, Sara Calla, who was shot dead by a hitman at the door of her house.

“We also asked for the closure of night clubs, but none of that was fulfilled. The assaults and robberies continued during this month of the State of Emergency,” the leader said.

Despite opposition from leaders of social organizations, the provincial mayor of San Román, Óscar Cáceres Rodríguez, was the most interested in extending the State of Emergency, arguing that “there were positive results such as the arrest of criminal gangs.”

The day before, the mayor had considered that the state of emergency should be extended to consolidate calm.
