Following a citizen alert, the staff of the National Forest and Wildlife Service (SERFOR) managed to rescue a live monkey that was seen wandering on the public road in the city of Juliaca, in the province of San Román.
Residents reported that the animal had entered some houses on the Juliaca-Lampa highway, so SERFOR professionals arrived at the scene and found the small primate, which was stressed and dehydrated.
Following the evaluation carried out by specialists, it was a male specimen, weighing 1,700 kg and measuring 60 cm (from head to tail), which showed normal behaviour and its joints were working well. It also had favourable traits for returning to nature, so it was decided to transfer it to the Macusani headquarters, in the district of San Gabán, for its care and subsequent release.
ANTECEDENT
In July of this year, personnel from the Decentralized Environmental Protection Unit of the National Police of Peru recovered a monkey that was found wandering around the bus terminal in the city of Juliaca.
The assessment determined that the primate was mobile and in apparent good health, and was therefore transferred to the Macusani headquarters in the San Gabán district.
“Two monkeys were recovered in just two months due to citizen alerts, which is worrying and suggests that there are still people who have these wild animals as pets. As an Authority, we have been strengthening control and awareness activities in a coordinated manner with various institutions, but it is important that the population reports these events.”said Juan Carlos Huanca, technical administrator of SERFOR Puno.
