Pulmonologists warn of serious signs of respiratory infections

The Dominican Society of Pulmonology and Thorax Surgery (Sdnct) warned of a sustained increase in respiratory viral infections in the country, with simultaneous circulation of influenza A and Brespiratory syncytial virus (RSV), rhinovirus and a smaller number of Covid-19 cases, according to a statement released this Thursday.

The entity called on the population to remain vigilant and seek medical attention with the early appearance of symptoms.

The scientific organization pointed out that in recent weeks an increase in fever and flu symptoms has been observed in adults and children, a situation that has caused a notable work absenteeism and academic. Symptoms that require monitoring include persistent fever, general malaise, muscle aches, nasal congestion, and cough for more than 48 to 72 hours.

The Sdnct insisted that those who present these signs must go to a pulmonologist in a timely manner to receive evaluation and treatmentin order to avoid complications.

Vulnerable population and risks

The statement emphasizes that certain groups require special attention due to their higher risk to develop pneumoniarespiratory crises or respiratory failure. Among them are:

  • People with heart diseases or chronic respiratory diseases such as asthmaCOPD or pulmonary fibrosis.
  • Immunocompromised patients cancerhematological disorders or immunosuppressive therapies.
  • Older adults and small children.

The entity warns that the early medical care can avoid complications serious, so it is recommended not to minimize the symptoms.

Preventive measures

The Sdnct also recalled that the influenza vaccine is available in the country and constitutes one of the main prevention tools. He also recommended the use of mask in case of presenting symptoms to reduce transmission in work, family and community spaces.

The union reiterated its commitment to national respiratory health and urged the population to inform themselves, protect themselves and go to medical consultation at any warning sign.
