The Secretary of Health of Puerto Rico, Carlos Mellado, reported this Tuesday that two additional cases of monkey poxwhich brings to four those infected by this virus on the island.
“The monkeypox surveillance system confirms today (2) cases for Orthopox virus,” Mellado said on his Twitter account.
The local Health Minister indicated that the four cases reported in total on the island “are not linked to each other and are associated with trips“.
Mellado also explained that the latest detection tests were carried out in the laboratory of the Department of Health.
The first reported case of monkeypox on the island was reported on June 29.
At the time, the Health Department said in a statement that the patient remained in isolation at home, was in stable condition and was receiving medical care.
The second case, confirmed on July 8, was an adult between the ages of 20 and 35 with a travel history to Europe.
That case was one of five suspects currently under investigation, of which three gave negative results and another was reclassified for not meeting clinical and epidemiological criteria.
According to the World Health Organizationin the week between June 27 and July 3, around 2,600 new infections were registered in the world. monkey pox77% more than in the previous week.
