Puerto Plata old man celebrates his 108 years of life; he still plays tambora

PUERTO PLATA.- To the rhythm of the rhythmic typical merengue, Mr. Saturnino Peña (Don Satu), celebrated the arrival of his 108 years of life.

The long-lived citizen was born on May 11, 1914 in the Blanco area, belonging to the municipality of Luperón, in the western part of the province of Puerto Plata.

His birthday of a century and almost a decade of existence, was celebrated with affection by his relatives in his home located on Calle 3 in the Los Coquitos sector of this Atlantic city.

Saturnino Peña was accompanied by his 89-year-old wife, Isabel Plácido, and he still retains his lucid mind, telling children, grandchildren and friends anecdotes of multiple episodes that they have lived through in his centennial existence.

This enduring Dominican, in his youth he worked as a shoemaker and assistant to transport buses that traveled from Puerto Plata to Santiago.

But he also earned a living for his family as a drummer, since typical Dominican music is his great passion and he proudly expresses having played at parties of the late accordionist Tatico Henríquez.

Impeccably dressed, smiling and wearing a short-brimmed hat, among the gifts received on his birthday was a new tambora which he played to the rhythm of a merengue.

Offspring

He is the father of 14 children, who are: Daniel, Carmen, Víctor (El Cacú), Benito, Juliana (Jobita), María Altagracia (Lilian), María Teresa (Elena), Gladis, Chiche, Selenia, Esperanza (Viva), Mirian, Joselito, Esmeralda (Mayi) and Jesus.

It is noteworthy that his great offspring have given Don Satu Peña more than 45 grandchildren, in addition to 25 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren, who have fun listening to his experiences and numerous stories that he has been an inexorable witness.
