A group of activists from the organization Bridges of Love coordinated by the Cuban-American professor Carlos Lazo, began the urgent sending of humanitarian resources to Cuba to support the communities affected after the passage of Hurricane Melissa.
The first action was the transfer to the island of 2,500 pounds of powdered milk destined for the victims of the disaster and who are already in the country.
Lazo stated that the aid is part of an international campaign that seeks to mobilize people from different backgrounds in support of the island.
“We know that it is a grain in a sea of needs. But from granite to granite a bridge is built,” he expressed in his public message.
Activists Medea Benjamin and Tighe Barry, representatives of the American peace movement, also participate in this initiative. codepink. According to its organizers, new donations would be allocated to food, basic supplies and other resources for affected communities.
Lazo called for solidarity regardless of political positions or beliefs.
“People united in their humanity, beyond creeds and ideologies,” he said, inviting those who wish to collaborate to make contributions through the campaign website: https://www.codepink.org/melissa2025.
This campaign, which aims to raise 60 thousand dollars, has managed to raise more than 20 thousand in less than 48 hours.
With these funds, the organizers intend to send “food, water, powdered milk, solar panels and generators to the most affected areas.”
Professor Carlos Lazo, in his communication when launching this campaign, stressed that those who cannot contribute financially can support by spreading the information. “We are the same humanity,” he concluded.
This shipment marks one of the first efforts of civil organizations in the United States to contribute to the recovery after the impact of Hurricane Melissa, whose effect left several Cuban communities with material damage and difficulties in accessing food and basic supplies.
