Public Health says dengue cases drop 65%

The Ministry of Public health highlighted that in the country there was a reduction of 65.54% in cases of dengue during the year 2024, compared to 2023.

By making known the main indicators of the epidemiological bulletin corresponding to Epidemiological Week number 51, the entity said that they have a cumulative number of positives for the virus of 1,284.

He indicated that the accumulated incidence is 12.27 cases of dengue per 100,000 inhabitants. The highest incidence was recorded in San José de Ocoa, with 96.86 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

It points out that until SE-51, 29 suspected cases were reported, none confirmed as positive.

According to geographical distribution, they were mainly reported in: Duarte Province: 31% (9 cases), Santo Domingo: 14% (4 cases) and María Trinidad Sánchez: 10.3% (3 cases).

It ensures that the key prevention factors were: timely and timely implementation of educational campaigns aimed at populationwhich resulted in the elimination of thousands of mosquito breeding sites, actions led by the Provincial Directorates and Health Areas.

Furthermore, constant monitoring of the disease in all provinces through the Epidemiology Directorate. He states that for this year, the institution poses the challenge of guaranteeing the continuity of these prevention and surveillance strategies to maintain the positive trend and continue reducing the risks for the population.

In addition, It stood out as a model of effectiveness in the implementation of preventive and control measures, where citizens, together with public and private institutions and the Provincial Directorates and Health Areas (DPS/DAS), played a fundamental role.

The institution highlighted that the sustained decrease in suspected and confirmed cases reflects the effectiveness of prevention and control strategies. However, he says that these positive results would not have been possible without the co-responsibility of the population and the active collaboration of the entities that joined the national effort.

“The results obtained are a reflection of the continuous efforts of the Ministry of Public Health and the collaboration of citizens and different entities, which demonstrates that joint work can make a difference in the fight against dengue,” he stated.

Other indicators

In another matter, the Ministry of Health said during SE-51 no suspected or confirmed cases of cholera were reported in the country. To date, 160 suspected cases have been reported, of which 53% correspond to men, with the group aged 60 years or older being the most affected (22% of cases). Regarding malaria, 237 suspected cases and 4 confirmed cases were reported.

Leprosy cases

The Ministry of Public Health reported that it has registered a cumulative 43 cases of leprosy, of which 58.14% correspond to men and 41.86% to women.

He points out that the Dominican Republic maintains a rigorous approach to the surveillance, diagnosis and treatment of this disease.

In addition, Public Health ensures that it implements strategies such as tracing and examining patient contacts and administering chemoprophylaxis with a single dose of rifampicin, in order to confront the disease and prevent its spread in areas where cases are recorded.
