HAVANA, Cuba. – “They have been trying to find a solution to my case since November and they are not doing anything. I am desperate because my son’s health is not improving due to the conditions he is living in,” she said in an interview with CubaNet Evelyn Pineda Concepción, whose youngest son has cerebral palsy.
According to him, he currently lives in his mother’s house, where he occupies “a wooden barbecue” that does not meet the minimum conditions.
“We are talking about a barbecue that is propped up and is falling down. All the planks are broken and I sleep there with my son because there is no room for us downstairs. Also, when it rains everything gets wet because the roof leaks in torrents. In these conditions it is impossible for my son to get better,” said the 29-year-old.
In August 2023, his son was hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the Pediatric Hospital of Central Havana after being infected with a parasite in his environment. The child was bedridden for three months, so his mother decided to sell their home to buy a pressure sore mattress and cover other needs for the child, such as his food.
“[Las autoridades] They hide behind and blackmail me by saying that I had my house and I sold it, but I had to do it in order to buy everything my son needed, including medicines because in this country there is nothing for a child with his condition,” she lamented.
“I am not asking for a mansion, I just need a room with a kitchen and bathroom where I can live with my son who has cerebral dysplasia and does not walk, he is bedridden. He is also HIV positive; that is why he cannot live in these conditions and he knows that. Public health“Everyone knows it,” he said.
Due to her constant complaints and demands to the authorities, Pineda Concepción claims that she has received threats from the State Security.
“I told them I was going to sneak into a shop or into an empty house and they told me that if I did, they would put me in jail. I am not going to allow the barbecue to fall on my son or for him to get pneumonia because of the humidity here; I will do whatever is necessary to save him,” he said.
Pineda Concepción is a member of the Movement of Opponents for a New Republic (MONR)an organization that demands that the island’s regime respect human rights.
