Public Health confirms cholera cases

The Director of Risk and Disaster Management of the Ministry of Public healthGina Estrella, reported this Wednesday on the detection of four new positive cases to angerbringing the total number of infections in the country to 17 (13 local and four imported).

Estrella explained that the ministry maintains house-to-house operations in sectors such as La Zurza and Capotillo, where a random survey of 68 samples was carried out, taking tests from both symptomatic patients and others without symptoms, including those who presented themselves at the Hospital. “Of these tests, we only have four positives. Two of them in completely asymptomatic patients and two that corresponded to patients admitted to the hospital (Goico).”

The lady indicated that Public health works hand in hand with the Corporation of Aqueduct and Sewerage of Santo Domingo (CAASD) and the ministries of Education, Environment and Public Works to develop the work of promotion and prevention of illness.

“We are waiting for permission to build the bridge and be able to move the dredgers, the equipment to the area to begin dredging a large part of La Isabela that adjoins the La Zurza sector,” he said.

Likewise, Estrella assured that they are working on the search for efficient ways to dump solid waste and improve the quality of the waters of La Poza.

“We are monitoring any area that is on the banks of the river,” he reiterated.

Regarding the proliferation of the bacteria in sectors such as Villas Agrícolas and San Carlos that are not on the river bank, the doctor said that “the fact that I live in one sector does not mean that I do not move to another.”

For his part, the Vice Minister of Collective Health, Eladio Pérez, recalled that in the neighboring nation of Haiti, more than 24,000 cases have already been reported and more than 450 people have died.
