Public employees sang “unhappy birthday” to the minimum wage

Public employees gathered in different parts of Caracas to protest the minimum wage that, this March 15, will be one year old at 130 bolivars

About one year after the last salary increase by the Government of Nicolas MaduroWorkers in the education, health, transportation, retirees, pensioners, and other public entities protested this Wednesday, March 15, in different areas of Caracas.

A group of teachers gathered at 11:00 am in front of the headquarters of the Pedagogical Institute of Caracas, located on José Antonio Páez avenue, where with a symbolic cake they sang “unhappy birthday” to the minimum wage, which is one year old. to be set at 130 bolivars.

Romelio Belopresident of the Teachers Association of the Libertador Experimental Pedagogical University, expressed his rejection of the government’s refusal to give a salary increase.

“We are in a situation of not being able to attend to education in the spaces of our universities and educational institutes because many educators do not even have the means to pay for a ticket, or technological platforms to attend to them remotely,” he lamented.

He described the situation in the country as “very serious” because the mission of educators and the right of students to receive the education they deserve are being disrespected. He added that “we have to keep fighting. That is why we will bite this cake to celebrate the year of human misery that we have had ».

For his part, Keta Stephany, secretary of acts, memory and training of the Federation of Associations of University Professors of Venezuela, mentioned that in addition to asking for a decent salary “that covers the needs of the people”, the educators want to propose collective bargaining and benefits “that the instructive Onapre (National Budget Office) was violent. Finally we are demanding trade union freedom so that they stop persecuting the teachers, professors and trade unionists who are fighting for a living wage that is a constitutional right”.

He also asked that they return the withholdings “that the Government is seizing and that we contribute to our union and that the Patria System has dammed them instead of paying them. We already made a complaint and the ILO (International Labor Organization) responded to us because that violates union freedom.

He called on the Minister of Education yelitze santaella to listen to educators “because collective bargaining is a right.”

Groups affiliated with the government also attended to demonstrate their support for Nicolás Maduro and with megaphones shouted slogans in his favor.

Given the lack of response from the authorities, the protesters went to Plaza Miranda where they “sang birthdays” to the minimum wage and organized a symbolic burial.

They warned that they will continue in the streets and called a new protest next Monday, March 20, at the Tamanaco gate of the Central University of Venezuela.
