A lawyer from the Public Criminal Defense Office of Antofagasta will assume the defense of the former mayor of that city, Karen Rojo, who has been a fugitive from justice for more than 40 days after leaving the country on March 24, 24 hours after the Court Supreme will ratify the effective sentence of five years and one day in prison for the crime of tax fraud. After this, she Rojo landed in the Netherlands, specifically in Amsterdam and has not managed to be caught by the Chilean justice system despite the alert to Interpol.
According to La Tercera, the only and last signal given by the former communal chief was known when a movement was registered in the judicial file of the case. It is a document written by Karen Rojo, in which she asked the Antofagasta Guarantee Court for a change of her lawyers.
“I come in this act to appoint a sponsor attorney to Mr. Daniel Mackinnon Roehrs and I confer power to the attorney Mr. Felipe Moraga Marinovic”, reads the letter where, in addition, the sentenced person revoked “all sponsorship and power conferred (…) prior to this date”.
This fact ended the professional relationship between Rojo and his former lawyers, Jorge Bofill, César Ramos, Joao Bofill and Sebastián Bofill, who hours later entered a letter renouncing their representation in court.
Red’s attempt landed her in an awkward situation. This after the Guarantee Court demanded that she ratify the new sponsorship before a minister of faith of the court, which could indicate the whereabouts of Rojo, which remains unknown. Until this happens, her defense will remain in the hands of the Public Criminal Defense Office.
