PRSC urges approval of new Penal Code

PRSC urges approval of new Penal Code

The Christian Social Reformist Party (PRSC) asked the National Congress for the urgent approval of the new Penal Code, given the “orgy” of blood, violence and criminality that the Dominican Republic is experiencing.

The general secretary of the PRSC, Ramón Rogelio Genao, pointed out that in the face of the wave of violence that the country is experiencing, “the best vaccine is the approval of the new Penal Code that is pending in the Chamber of Deputies.”
“The accumulation of sentences, the increases in sentences and the punishment for recidivism set forth in the proposal for the new Penal Code are essential tools to fight crime and violence,” the legislator said.

He argued that in order to generate a culture of peace, it is necessary to provide “claws” to the Public Ministry and the Judiciary that discourage criminality, violence and delinquency.”

The also senator for the province of La Vega, expressed that events such as the assassination of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Orlando Jorge Mera, should draw the attention of the National Congress “so that they finish approving once and for all the new Code Penal”.

He stressed that the PRSC also favors promoting public policies to disarm the population, while stating that in the Dominican Republic “there are more weapons than cell phones, and the vast majority are illegal.”

“The new Penal Code is sufficiently agreed upon and the best way to honor Orlando Jorge Mera is for the Chamber of Deputies to approve the code now,” he concluded.

On the eve, the Dominican Council of Evangelical Unity (Codue) requested that work be done for a better social coexistence among Dominicans.

Pastor Feliciano Lacen Custodio, representative of the entity, maintained that the approach to citizen security in the Dominican Republic is not very different from what is done in the rest of the Central American and Caribbean region: a punitive approach to everything related to crime. , homicides and security. He called for fostering a “culture of peace.”
