The Municipal Council of Providencia approved this Tuesday the proposal to rename the Plaza Ines de Suarez like square Patricio Aylwin Azócar. This, in recognition of the former president, who lived for nearly 60 years in the commune.
“The new Plaza Patricio Aylwin Azócar has 15 thousand M2 of green areas and is being completely remodeled. It is located between Pocuro, Francisco Bilbao, Escuela de Comunicaciones and Regimiento Cazadores streets, right in front of Inés de Suárez Park, which maintains its original name,” the Providencia Municipality said in a statement.

The Mayor of Providencia, Evelyn Mattheistressed that “this is a well-deserved tribute and I want to remember that Inés de Suárez is still alive in the Park and some people still do not understand that: there is an Inés de Suárez Park and there is a Presidente Aylwin Azocar Square.”
Matthei recalled that the idea of paying homage to the former president was proposed by the councilor Paul Jaeger, last April. The City Council approved the initiative. Subsequently, the municipality consulted the opinion and approval of the Neighborhood Council No. 7 of Providencia, and the residents who are members of the Civil Society Council (COSOC).
Former President Aylwin came to live in Providencia in 1956, in a house he bought on Arturo Medina street, remaining in that sector all his life. The Municipality of Providencia gave him the recognition of illustrious son in 2015. That was the last public act in which he participated.
