Protests in Peru: Road corridor blocked and Antapaccay mining operations interrupted in Cusco

Antapaccay operates with only 38% of its workforce due to blockades

They resume violent actions. Protesters blocked the company’s access to the South Road Corridor, in the Cusco province of Espinar. This route is used by companies to transport the minerals they extract in the territory of and Apurímac, thus affecting three large operations: Las Bambas, Hudbay and Antapaccay.

As recalled, Antapaccay reported that it operates with only 38% of its workforce, including workers and contractors, due to the blockades that exist in the South Road Corridor.

Through a statement, the Glencore mining company indicated that they were forced to temporarily suspend the transport of concentrate and that, since January 4, it has been carrying out its activities in very complex conditions.

“Road blocks prevent the entry of supplies for the operation and the feeding of workers, as well as the possibility of their demobilization to their places of origin safely. Since then, our capacity is progressively being impacted in all its projects. As a result of restrictions, operations are only 38% of the CMA workforce and contractors”reads the document.

Antapaccay specified that, if this situation continues, the economy of the province of Espinar (Cusco) and Peru will be affected.

The company generates 70% (canon and royalties) of the municipal budget of the province. Delivers up to 3% of its annual profits before taxes to finance sustainable development projects… contracts services with more than 100 local companies for close to S/ 220 million annually and generates 8% of the copper that the country exports“, held.

Given this, the mining company stated that although the company respects the right to protest, it must condemn the violent acts apparently caused by infiltrators in the province.

The Antapaccay company was a victim of violence on January 12 and 13, to such an extent that it put the lives and health of its workers at risk. In addition, they caused serious damage to the facilities, such as the destruction of the pump that provides water to the communities in the area and the burning of four vehicles owned by community and local companies in Espinar.
