Protesters in Caracas demand “real amnesty” and release of all political prisoners

Manifestación este martes la Universidad Central de Venezuela, en Caracas

MIAMI, United States. – A student and citizen mobilization took over the Central University of Venezuela, in Caracas, this Tuesday to demand the “immediate and full” release of all people detained for political reasons and the approval of a “total” and “unconditional” amnesty, according to reports from several digital media.

According to Cocuyo Effectthe rally began around 10:00 am at the headquarters of the Federation of University Centers (FCU-UCV), inside the campus, with the participation of students, relatives of political prisoners, activists and other sectors of civil society. The protesters demanded a “real and non-selective amnesty”, in addition to “transparency in judicial processes” and “guarantees of non-repetition of arbitrary detentions”.

While participating in the protest, former political prisoner Javier Tarazona declared to Cocuyo Effect that Venezuelans will maintain pressure in the streets and that the country requires restitution of rights and reparation for victims. “Venezuela needs to reconcile and reconciliation undoubtedly involves the restitution of rights, it involves reparation for the victims, it involves ensuring that there is no repetition,” he stated.

Likewise, he maintained: “The amnesty law is a step, but a series of laws that have been used for criminalization and persecution must be repealed.”

The National He indicated that the mobilization extended from the FCU-UCV to the Rectorate Plaza and that during the tour slogans such as “Free them all!” and “The university is not silent.” The media attributed to the president of the FCU-UCV, Miguel Ángel Suárez, the demand that the amnesty be approved “expeditiously and without exclusions”, with full restitution of rights for the beneficiaries.

Other media reported that, in addition to demanding releases, the protesters denounced “arbitrary arrests” and the “criminalization of dissent” and the “union struggle.”

The NGO Foro Penal reported in its most recent balance that it registers 687 political prisoners in Venezuela, with data updated until February 2. The organization also indicated that it had verified 344 releases since January 8.

Last Friday, the president in charge of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, announced a “general amnesty law” for political prisoners in the country and ordered that the initiative be sent to the National Assembly of Venezuela, with the objective of “favoring national coexistence,” according to her statement at an event held in the Superior Court of Justice.

“I ask everyone that no one imposes violence or revenge, so that we all live with respect,” said Rodríguez, after stating that it was a decision discussed with Nicolas Maduro.

The announcement aims to judicially close the files of those who have already been released from prison during the release process opened in January, and to expand the scope to the hundreds of detainees who are still imprisoned for political reasons, according to the reconstruction published by The Country.
