Protest in SP calls for Maduro's release and Venezuela's autonomy

Unions and social movements held a demonstration on Monday afternoon (5), in the capital of São Paulo, in which they called for the release of Nicolás Maduro. The act took place in front of the United States Consulate. Protest in SP calls for Maduro's release and Venezuela's autonomy

Participants defended the autonomy of the neighboring country, the search for peace and respect and solidarity with the Venezuelan government and people.

“We came to this event today not only to demonstrate our solidarity with the Venezuelan people, but to be able to highlight the position of working class students in relation to imperialist attacks, especially from the United States. Imperialism, regardless of which country it is, places itself in a position of domination of countries, especially those on the periphery of capitalism”, said USP Public Policy Management student Bianca Mondeja, member of the board of the National Student Union (UNE).

The student organization considers the “capacity for self-determination” of a people to be “non-negotiable”.

For professor Luana Bife, affiliated with the Central Única dos Trabalhadores (CUT), the United States’ action against Venezuela is “an interference that socially and economically destabilizes a country.” “One day after the invasion of Venezuela, Trump already reaffirms the possibility of advancing militarily against other countries. Our central position is for the self-determination of the people”, he reaffirms.

The member of the National Coordination of the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST), Gilmar Mauro, defended the immediate release of President Maduro. “We are here in solidarity with the Venezuelan people in defense of sovereignty and demanding the immediate release of President Maduro. Because in truth it is the continent, it is the democracies in the world that are threatened. And we, very particularly, due to what Trump himself, without mincing words, even different from others, said directly”, he highlighted.

According to Mauro, there are around 60 MST members in Venezuela today. According to him, the perception of movement members is that of a process of resumption of popular mobilizations in Venezuela.

“For many people who will not be with us on the streets, it generated indignation and this patriotic feeling, which is effectively emerging at this moment. This is happening even within Venezuela, even with the Venezuelan right-wing sectors. And we are seeing this within the United States as well,” he stated.

Attack

The United States (USA) launched on Saturday (3) “a large-scale attack against Venezuela”, which kidnapped Maduro and his wife. Hours later, at a press conference, President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. will govern the country until the conclusion a transition of power.

Nicolás Maduro, refuted, this Monday (5), the accusations of involvement in narco-terrorism, international drug trafficking and the use of heavy weapons. During a custody hearing at the Federal Court of the Southern District of Manhattan, in New York, Maduro said he was innocent, describing himself as a criminal. “prisoner of war” and a “decent man”.

UN

The United Nations Security Council met to discuss US military action. Representatives from China and Russia strongly condemned the military attack and called for Maduro’s immediate release and his wife, Cilia Flores.

The United States denied being at war or occupying Venezuela. The US representative at the UN, Ambassador Michael Waltz, said that the action on Venezuelan territory was legal and not military in nature.

During the emergency meeting of the United Nations (UN) Security Council this Monday (5), Brazilian ambassador Sérgio França Danese said that peace in South America is at risk.

Interim President

Delcy Rodríguez assumed the interim presidency of Venezuela this Monday (5). She is the first woman in the country’s history to lead the Executive, she has already demanded “the immediate release” of Nicolás Maduro, “the only president of Venezuela”, and condemned the United States military operation.

She was the country’s vice president before Maduro’s kidnapping. The Venezuelan Supreme Court appointed Delcy Rodríguez as head of state for a renewable 90-day term.
