Protest in Santiago for improvements in social security

Representatives of social and community entities from the city of Santiago marched this Saturday and set up a picket-vigil in front of the facilities of the National Social Security Council in this town, in search of improvements in the system, in favor of the working class and pensioners.

The call was made by institutions such as the Decent Social Security Coalitionand the Santiago Can Civic Movement.

The spokesmen for these social organizations, Domingo Ureña and Ariel Núñez, pointed out that this type of demonstration will be replicated throughout the country, until the National Congress amend the law of Social Securityto legally prevent the ARS and AFP’s from continuing to enrich themselves with the money of the Dominican working class.

Likewise, they criticized and demanded reasonable explanations for the discounts that were made to the amounts accumulated in the AFPs, from Dominican wage earners, an amount that they estimated at more than 73 million pesos.

Other organizations participating in the march-vigil were: A Home for Santiago, the Mirabal Sisters Feminist Movement, Gentío, the Cibao Women’s Coordinator, the Christian Workers’ Movement, the ADP, among others.
