Havana.- After eight months of imprisonment, the Prosecutor’s Office delivered the file of José Gabriel Barrenechea Chávez from the Provincial Court of Santa Clara and requested the maximum penalty of six years of deprivation of liberty for the writer and journalist. Barrenechea Chávez was arrested on November 8 of last year, after participating in a demonstration in the town of Crucijada, province of Villa Clara. His “infraction” consisted of joining hundreds of neighbors who protested peacefully for an electric blackout that extended for 48 uninterrupted hours.
Since then, the slope has been held in prison, waiting for trial for the alleged crime of “public disorders.”
The situation has been aggravated by the death of his mother, Zoila Esther Chávez Pérez, at the beginning of May.
