A man faces charges of mistreatment and illegal exploitation of natural resources after being discovered with two capuchin monkeys and a canary in captivity in his home, located in the municipality of Bello, north of the Aburrá Valley.

A man is prosecuted for keeping capuchin monkeys in captivity in deplorable situations. GELMA of the Prosecutor’s Office recovered the animals and charged the person responsible.

In a coordinated operation between environmental authorities of the Aburrá Valley, the Attorney General’s Office and the National Police, two primates and a canary were rescued that were in precarious conditions of captivity in a home in Bello, Antioquia.
The animals showed obvious signs of abuse, such as fractured teeth, wounds on the body and nervous behavior due to the stress caused by their confinement.
The rescue took place on November 15, after receiving a citizen complaint alerting about the situation. Officials from the Aburrá Valley Metropolitan Area also participated in the operation, who confirmed the serious conditions in which the animals were found.
The primates, a pair of capuchin monkeys, showed visible physical damage, such as broken teeth and wounds on various parts of their bodies.
Furthermore, their erratic and nervous behavior indicated that they were kept in captivity for a long period, away from their natural habitat.

The prosecutor of the Special Group to Fight Animal Abuse (Gelma) charged Daniel Felipe Wilchez Torres with the crimes of animal abuse and illicit use of renewable natural resources, due to the damage caused to the primates and the canary. However, Wilchez did not accept the charges brought against him during the court hearing.
This case highlights the need to continue fighting against animal abuse and the illegal possession of species in captivity.
The authorities highlighted the importance of citizen reporting to intervene effectively and protect animals from this type of abuse.
Furthermore, they reiterated their commitment to continue with the research to ensure that crimes related to cruel treatment of living beings are appropriately punished.
