Prosecutor's Office opens investigation into the collapse of a vehicular bridge over the La Vieja river

The Attorney General’s Office ordered initiate an investigation to determine possible criminal responsibilities as a result of the collapse of the vehicular bridge located over the La Vieja river, located between the departments of Quindío and Valle del Cauca.

In order to advance in the respective judicial work, the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation ordered a specialized technical team made up of a prosecutor and judicial police officers.

In the development of the first investigations, the group of prosecutors in charge of this case is advancing in urgent investigative acts to formally initiate criminal proceedings.

In the development of these inquiries, the prosecutors plan to advance a judicial inspection of the area of ​​the facts and practice the respective interviews and testimonials.

Once the collection of the elements of technical and testimonial evidence is completed, The Prosecutor’s Office will define if there are sufficient merits to summon to answer in interrogations or to go directly before the judges to formulate the respective imputations of charges.

This episode has generated growing concern among the community and the governments of Quindío and Valle del Cauca, after the collapse of the ‘La Vieja’ bridge that connects both departments and through which more than 60% of the country’s cargo transits.

In dialogue with RCN Radio, the governor of Quindío, Roberto Jaramillo, pointed out that “three months ago the National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) carried out a study of this bridge and found no anomaly.

“The concession has been managed by Autopistas del Café since 2005, so they will be the ones who must answer for the reconstruction of the bridge that has been built for more than 30 years and that apparently the necessary maintenance and follow-up was not being done to avoid this tragedy,” added Governor Jaramillo.
