In August 2021, the former director of Tourism Martín Pérez Banchero publicly denounced that the Secretary of State had made purchases with which he disagreed, “some of more than half a million dollars from a single company.” Banchero had been removed from office by Cardoso himself.
A few hours after Banchero’s complaint, Cardoso tendered his resignation as minister.
As a result of the situation, a parliamentary Investigative Commission was installed. From the Broad Front it was understood that there was an “excessive, discretionary and irregular” spending by the then Minister Cardoso, which generated enormous institutional damage to the public administration and in particular to the Ministry of Tourism.
The FA suggested to the Plenary Session of the House of Representatives that they send their actions to the Attorney General’s Office, in order to assess the existence of irregularities during Cardoso’s tenure as Minister of Tourism.
