The delegate attorney for Environmental and Agrarian Affairs Gustavo Guerrero Ruiz spoke with EL TIEMPO about various issues that he is in charge of from his office, including monitoring what happens with the increase in the volcanic activity of Nevado del Ruiz.

The Attorney General’s Office, through the Delegate for Environmental and Agrarian Affairs, and the delegate for Territorial Management and Governance, has also been coordinating with the regional and provincial attorneys in the departments in the area of influence of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, all attention to to the situation that has been presented by the increase in seismicity and the activity of the volcano.
“We must bear in mind, according to information from the Colombian Geological Service, that the volcano remains active, but in recent days there has been a greater increase in this type of activity, which has unleashed the need for the Attorney General’s Office to make echo of the calls that have been made by the Colombian Geological Service, but also by the Disaster Risk Management Unit“Guerrero said.
The solicitor’s requests have been made regarding municipalities review and update their care plansits disaster prevention and care plans, but also its local committees, which are legally obliged to keep all the municipalities active and also the departments so that they maintain contact, liaison and the necessary articulation with the respective municipal authorities.

“Measures must be taken, it is important that the Regional Autonomous Corporations, but also the municipalities with the support of said authorities, adopt the measures that are legally permitted, particularly according to the single decree of the environmental sector, Decree 1076, to prevent there is an affectation to health, particularly due to respiratory conditions to people due to this increase in this material,” the attorney stressed.
The official assured that in the country there is an articulated system that is being verified on the fulfillment of the obligations of all the actors through provincial and regional prosecutors.
“We do not have disciplinary powers, in fact, in the event that the attorneys identify any breach of the regulatory framework, they will give the corresponding transfer and undertake the disciplinary actions that may take place.“, the prosecutor pointed out.
