The resident legal adviser of the Department of Justice of the US Embassy, Brian Skaret, indicated that prosecutor Marcelo Pecci was “very brave” in the face of risk. “He always told the truth and with his life, until the last moment, he sought justice for the Paraguayan people,” he stressed.
This Friday began the training course on “Personal security for fiscal agents and fiscal leadership in times of crisis”, at the headquarters of the Attorney General’s Office. The training session was organized by the US Department of Justice and was carried out with the support of the US Embassy in Paraguay.
The training is in charge of Mr. Brian Skaret, resident legal adviser of the International Office for Tax Development, Assistance and Training of the Department of Justice (OPDAT), of the Embassy of the United States of America in Asunción.
In his opening speech, Skaret referred to a phrase by the American writer Ernest Hemingway referring to the following: “The best people have sensitivity to beauty, courage to face setbacks, discipline to tell the truth, ability to sacrifice, ironically, these virtues They make them vulnerable, they are often hurt, sometimes they are destroyed.”
Skaret added that prosecutor Marcelo Pecci published this same message only a few weeks before his tragic death. He loved beauty, from a great goal to an airplane landing gear to a successful strategic capture operation. For him these things were beautiful and as we all know, he was very brave in the face of risk, he always told the truth and with his life until the last moment he sought justice for the Paraguayan people, “he added.
Regarding a conversation he had with the prosecutor, Pecci said that his last message was: “Doctor Brian, when I return from Colombia, I will be ready to fight.” In addition, he emphasized: “Today we all want to be strong just like Dr. Marcelo Pecci was. As his father said recently. All of us, the 75 today are Marcelo Pecci. As prosecutors we have chosen to make ourselves vulnerable, each of you who bring charges and go to trial, who point the finger at the accused in the courtroom, who raid the house of a drug trafficker or check the bank accounts of the truly corrupt , you put yourself in danger and do it for Justice”, he pointed out.
Skaret stressed that prosecutors risk their lives in the name of Justice. “The most important thing we can do to protect ourselves, to protect our colleagues, is to guarantee that the authors of the death of Dr. Marcelo Pecci are investigated and prosecuted with the full rigor of the Law,” he emphasized.
