Prosecutor's Office announces investigation against Minister Julio Demartini for alleged intoxication in the Qali Warma program

The National Prosecutor’s Office announced the beginning of investigations against the minister of Development and Social Inclusion (Midis), Julio Demartiniand the vice minister of social benefits of Midis, Jessica Niño de Guzmán, for the complaint of intoxication of the students of the program Qali Warma in Puno and Cajamarca. Investigations will be carried out on both of them for the alleged crimes of omission, refusal and delay of duties.

According to the statement of the Public Ministrythe events that will be the subject of investigation involve program officials Qali Warma and the Regional Health Directorate (Diresa), as well as company representatives Frigoincaamong others.

“The facts refer to an alleged case of food poisoning of schoolchildren who consumed food from the Qali Warma national school feeding program in the regions of Puno and Cajamarca that involves officials of the aforementioned program and Diresa de Puno,” says the statement from the Prosecutor’s Office.

The investigations take place after, in March of this year, parents of Fist They reported that 16 minors became intoxicated after ingesting the products of the school program Qali Warma.

Qali Warma: what happened and why will the Prosecutor’s Office investigate the case?

A journalistic investigation by the Sunday newspaper Punto Final revealed an alleged corruption network that would involve a senior official of the program Qali Warmaafter the report of poisoning of 16 children in Cabana, Puno. According to the report, the company that promotes canned tuna, chicken and pork under the Don Simón brand would have tried to give bribes to alter the samples of minors who were victims of the poor state of canned food. One of the children made it to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Midis “greets” investigation into the Qali Warma case

The Ministry of Development issued a statement after learning of the Public Ministry’s decision to investigate two senior officials in its portfolio. In this regard, they assured that “they welcome any investigation that allows those responsible for having violated the nutrition of the children of Peru to be punished and condemned.”

“In that sense, it reaffirms its willingness and unconditional support to collaborate with all investigations that are initiated in order to provide all the elements of evidence required by the Attorney General’s Office,” the statement reads.
