Prosecutor Saab hopes that the amnesty law will guarantee a “100% pacified” country

Prosecutor Saab highlights preventive work to combat human trafficking

The president of the Republican Moral Council and Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab, pointed out that the Citizen Power unanimously supports the draft amnesty law promoted by the president in charge of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez.

During a day of The Public Ministry goes to your Community held on Thursday in the Los Palos Grandes plaza of the Chacao municipality, the head of the criminal action expressed that the Citizen Power “takes a step forward in that support and that gesture of agreement and reconciliation” on the part of the national Executive.

In that sense, he highlighted that the entities he directs have made contributions and ideas to the aforementioned draft that is currently being discussed within the National Assembly, according to the press release from the Public Ministry.

He said that the Public Ministry presented some considerations that were taken into account for the aforementioned draft.

“We have had meetings in the National Assembly, we have participated in working groups with members of the program for (democratic) coexistence and peace and with other members of the parliamentary commission that is discussing and debating this draft amnesty law,” Saab highlighted.

He described this initiative as exceptional, because it covers the most important historical moments of contemporary Venezuela in the last quarter of a century and hopes that the amnesty law guarantees a “100% pacified” country where the crimes included in the bill are not repeated.

Likewise, he highlighted that he reaches out to sectors that participated in coup d’état actions against President Hugo Chávez, responsible for the oil strike and other insurrectional actions of February and March 2014, as well as those of April, May, June and July 2017. “They are detained for actions that were documented at the time.”

Likewise, “violent actions that occurred with the potential for deaths and injuries, such as those that occurred in the post-election demonstrations on July 28, 2024, among others,” he recalled.

The past without amnesty

The representative of the institution that guarantees legality in the country mentioned that the governments of Rómulo Betancourt and Raúl Leoni established state terrorism and forced disappearances.

He recalled that, according to unofficial figures studied by the national human rights movement of the time, there were 50,000 civilian detainees in the country, who were prosecuted by military courts.

He said that selective murders were also carried out, such as those of Livia Gouverneur and Fabricio Ojeda, as well as massacres of peasants, and there were theaters of anti-guerrilla operations to illegally detain people and torture them in those spaces.

He mentioned the case of young Noel Rodríguez, who was disappeared and murdered in a theater of operations in the state of Sucre.

“There were 5,000 murdered and 3,000 disappearances in a period of the 1960s, and do you believe there was an amnesty law?” claimed the president of the Republican Moral Council.

He said that political parties that had senators and deputies in Congress were also disqualified, to lead them into an unequal process of armed struggle, in which an entire generation was exterminated.

Model in the world

Faced with attacks on the draft amnesty law, the head of the criminal action emphasized that this initiative should not be torpedoed.

“There may be divergences to reach agreements, but it should not be sabotaged, that is my call,” reflected the Attorney General.

He indicated that in the midst of the consultations they will continue to contribute ideas so that the amnesty law becomes a model in the world.

Street justice in figures

The Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab, reported that to date 115,543 people have been served among the different street justice programs carried out by the Public Ministry.

During a day of “The Public Ministry goes to your Community” held this Thursday, February 12 in the Los Palos Grandes square in the Chacao municipality, the also president of the Republican Moral Council stated that 10,265 criminal complaints have also been recorded so far.

In that sense, Saab highlighted that this type of activities will continue to expand in the different regions of the country simultaneously to serve the people “where they need it.”

Global figures of people served

During the activity, the head of criminal action in the country revealed the numbers of people served in the national territory both in tax offices and in street justice sessions, which to date reach a total of 4,827,128.

He stressed that this effort is the product of daily and systematic work, and that “even in the worst moments, like last January 3, these types of activities did not stop,” says the press release from the Public Ministry.

“We were there to demonstrate that the Venezuelan State works, the consequence of which is peace and calm throughout an entire country, and a people who want to live in a peaceful manner,” he said.

On this occasion, he reported that 120 people were assisted in the Los Palos Grandes plaza, who submitted complaints related to injuries, disturbances, animal abuse, invasions, fraud, improper access, violation of human rights and gender violence.

“Notice the importance of addressing cases like these in public spaces, apart from tax offices, which has to be highly valued,” said Saab.

Regarding the guidelines, he noted that the number was 54, as well as 11 attentions on expediting cases and 2 on social assistance.

He explained that for this they had the support of the Citizen Power, the Víctor Valera Mora library of the Public Ministry, the National School of Prosecutors, the Chacao Municipal House of Justice and Salud Chacao.
