Prosecutor investigates the president of the Olympic Committee for alleged corruption

The investigations were announced during the renewal process of the authorities and bodies of the Venezuelan Olympic Committee for the period 2022-2026.

The Attorney General’s Office announced an investigation against Eduardo Álvarez, president of the Venezuelan Olympic Committee (VOC), for alleged acts of corruption within that organization between 2007 and 2008.

The 67th National Prosecutor, Farik Mora Salcedo, was appointed to investigate the complaints received by the National Assembly elected in 2020 about “irregularities committed by Eduardo Álvarez in the organization of the Copa América in 2007 and the preparation of Venezuelan athletes for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. ”.

The Public Ministry also announced that they requested a measure prohibiting the exit of the country against the president of the Venezuelan Olympic Committee. Eduardo Álvarez is accused of the alleged crimes of fraudulent embezzlement, evasion of the bidding procedure and aggravated embezzlement.

The investigations were announced during the renewal process of authorities and bodies of the Venezuelan Olympic Committee for the period 2022-2026.

Álvarez has remained as president of the VOC since 2006, after more than four re-elections. For the 2018-2021 period, he said that his proposal was “to work on two clear proposals: the sustainability of the sport and the education and training of our technicians. With that, plus the support of our allies, we hope to continue developing the sport in Venezuela.”

Has been critical of the management of the Ministry of Sport since 2017because he assures that this portfolio should only be dedicated to sports “and not as a youth ministry because there they have culture, art, music, dance, the street, youth work and other programs.”
