On the morning of this Tuesday, 911 received a complaint after a suspicious briefcase appeared lying in front of a small tree on Avenida Uruguay corner Cuareim, in the Center of Montevideo. The element, located in front of the headquarters of the Prosecutor’s Office for Sexual Offenses, was detonated by the Department of Explosives of the National Army.
The head of the Department, Gastón Techera, explained that he became aware of the presence of the “suspicious object” by calling 911, later Firefighters and Brigade personnel were present at the scene.
In the first place, an X-ray analysis was carried out, to verify what was inside the briefcase, because the texture of the briefcase did not allow discerning whether or not there was any explosive material, they proceeded to explode the object in a controlled manner. In the end it was detailed that the briefcase was empty.
The Head of Press and Public Relations of the National Directorate of Firefighters, Pablo Benítez, explained that when in doubt, it is assumed that there is and proceeds with a disruptor, which is a cannon that shoots water at a very high speed to deactivate the alleged artifact. With this method the briefcase was “exploded”. He reported that there was no second detonation, and now a chemical test is being carried out in order to determine whether or not there was some type of explosive.
This Monday the court prosecutor, Juan Gómez, began a summary with charge separation and retention of 50% of the salary of the prosecutor for Sexual Offenses, Raúl Iglesias. This was reported to Diario La R by the director of Communication of the Attorney General’s Office, Javier Benech.
