The Prosecutor of the Nation, Delia Espinozarejected the president’s proposal Dina Boluarte who proposed last Tuesday to resume the debate on the death penalty.
In this regard, Espinoza recalled that Peru is attached to an inter-American and global system of defense and recognition of human rights, therefore, the death penalty is prohibited.
“The death penalty is outlawed. We cannot have a setback in that sense. Let us not forget that, if the death penalty is implemented in Peru, there may also be judicial errors. We can all make mistakes. If there is a conviction and it leads to the death penalty, what happens if there is a subsequent review? You have to think things through very carefully, you have to analyze and debate in greater depth,” he said in dialogue with the press.
During a press conference, Justice Minister Eduardo Arana stated that the death penalty proposal, promoted by Dina Boluarte, will be submitted to national consultation.
“The president is serious. We are going to submit it for consideration by citizens at the national level,” he expressed during his speech.
Boluarte proposed the death penalty for child rapists, after the murder of a 12-year-old girl last weekend in a human settlement in Villa María del Triunfo.
“It is time that in the face of events of this magnitude, which should be inconceivable within a society, we propose drastic measures; it is time to open the debate on the death penalty for rapists of minors,” said the president.
