Prosecutor asks Minister Valderrama to explain the phrase “we are violating the law to save you”

The Minister of Agricultural Development, Augusto Valderrama, must submit to the Administration Attorney’s Office an explanatory report on statements he gave at a meeting between members of the Rice Agri-Food Chain, where he said they violate the law to save the sector.

“We are violating the law to save you,” said the minister in a heated debate, without, so far, the authority having given any explanation about the context in which the issue arose.

The request of the attorney Rigoberto González was given as a result of the fact that on February 1 the lawyer Ernesto Cedeño Alvarado presented a brief, against the minister and other officials of that ministry, to investigate the controversial expressions of Valderrama.

“In view of the foregoing, this Office of the Attorney General, in exercise of its constitutional and legal powers to monitor the official conduct of public officials and to ensure that all of them fully perform their duties, requests that you send us an explanatory report on the aforementioned facts, in a term not exceeding five (5) business days,” the attorney said in a letter sent to Valderrama dated February 3, 2023.
