The Superior Prosecutor Specialized in Crimes of Illicit Association, Alexis Medina, referred this Thursday to the different actions carried out by the Public Ministry to remove criminal groups from circulation.
He mentioned that countless operations have been carried out to disorganize these groups, which are enshrined in Article 330 of the Penal Code, which deals with gang activity.
“In 2022 we have carried out three operations on gangs, that goes hand in hand with operations in Colón. Two have been held in Panama City and many more are planned for the year. These three operations involved 24 people linked and 41 people have been convicted, related to the crime of gang activity in Panama,” said the prosecutor.
He commented that, if we talk about since 2015 that proceedings began, “we would be talking about an approximate of more than 157 operations. In 2015 there were 501 people linked to the operations, which were 20. In 2021, 15 operations were carried out, resulting in some 145 people linked”.
