A reform approved by the Chamber of Deputies of Mexico authorizes the resources “abandoned” in banks to be used to finance public security issues. The proposal was sent to Senatewhere it must be endorsed for its enactment.

Since 1990, in Mexico it is possible to confiscate resources from accounts that have not registered movements for three years, but in that case the money is transferred to a global account. If the estate continues without presenting any activity for three more years, the resources are allocated to a public charity.
The initiative sent by mier and Guerra was approved by the lower house with 483 votes in favor, zero against and one abstention last Tuesday and a day later it was received by the Senate, which has already begun discussions for its eventual vote.
The details of the proposal
The project intends to modify article 61 of the Law of Federal Credit Institutions so that the inactive resources that have been sent to a global account prescribe in favor of public security after six years and not towards a charity as it happened.
The money collected will be distributed 50% to the federal forces, 30% to the states and 20% to the municipalities and mayors of the country. Banking institutions would be required to deliver the resources confiscated during the year to the government within a maximum period of 15 days from December 31.
