Some 1,060 families residing on land owned by the State Sugar Council in the Villa Central Municipal District, in Barahonawere benefited with their property title certificates as a result of judicial and administrative procedures that the Executing Technical Unit for State Land Titling (Utect).
President Louis Abinader He personally began the delivery of the 1,060 titles to the barahoneros, in a different scenario than usual, with a platform in the middle, surrounded by the public, without the traditional table of honor or the podium.
The president took the stage and was interrupted by those present who chanted the re-election slogan: “four more.” Abinader kept his face expressionless and waited until the voices had subsided before beginning his speech. He spoke exclusively of qualification.
Around the place where the activity was held, dozens of people marched with color printed posters asking for the president’s reappointment.
The actual number of intervened properties is 1,744, but the rest could not be delivered due to situations of determination of heirs, conflicts between families and neighbors or people who are outside the country.
Mérid Torres, director of Titling and State Lands, explained that the estimated number of beneficiaries at the beginning was 600, but in the process the number almost tripled.
“We are no longer afraid that they will take this house away from us,” said the evangelical pastor Canela Félix, chosen by the organizers of the event to express the words of gratitude. Like her, many others expressed gratitude that they will no longer have to fear the specter of eviction.
The land was transferred from the CEA to the Dominican Agrarian Institute in order to carry out the process, which delayed the process. Barrio Balaguer, Los Blanquizales, La Montañita and Los Solares de Milton were affected.
With the efforts made by the authorities, the locals avoided spending 129,520,000 pesos. The total area of the lots is 685,563.87 square meters.
Mérid Torres estimated that more than 12,000 titles have already been issued in the southern region.
During the activity, Abinader reported that the Jaime Mora hospital is going to become a maternal and child hospital for the entire region. To a group of people who chanted calling for the construction of streets, he replied “that’s coming.”
