London. The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, pointed out yesterday that prolonged covid is devastating the lives and livelihoods of tens of millions of people, and is wreaking havoc on health systems and economies, for which he urged countries to launch measures immediate Y sustained to deal with the crisis very serious.

The impact of prolonged covid requires immediate action and there are five key elements to drive the effort forwardsaid the WHO chief in an article published in Guardian.

“First, continue to listen to the group of patients, researchers and health workers facing prolonged covid, from whom we learn. Governments must use this information to shape their diagnosis, support and treatment policies.

Second, the best way to prevent prolonged covid is to avoid infection, through testing, therapeutics, and vaccination. While 70 percent have received vaccinations, in low-income countries only 22 percent have been immunizedTedros mentioned.

“Third, systematic information on patients with prolonged covid is required. Currently the data we have is from high-income countries, leaving us without reference to what happens in low- and middle-income countries. Not knowing the scale of the challenge we face, or whether the condition is different in different parts of the world or in certain populations, undermines our response and delays the scientific community’s understanding of prolonged covid and how best to treat it. The WHO has a platform that aggregates anonymous reports of patients with prolonged covid, I urge countries to share reports on the subject.

“Fourth, although there is a lot of research on prolonged covid, investment is needed to expand our knowledge to improve treatments and to develop better clinical management. Again, this effort must be global, not just confined to high-income countries.

Finally, people with prolonged covid need care and support. For countries with covid clinics, the wait is sometimes long, so it is necessary to start integrating multidisciplinary care into health systems since patients require it. This includes neurology, rehabilitation, psychology, speech therapy, and respiratory, among others. The delay in clinical care in patients with prolonged covid not only impacts their quality of life but also the length of time they will have symptomssaid the head of the WHO.

On the other hand, the European Union (EU) and the WHO recommended combining the administration of vaccines against covid-19 and seasonal flu in this winter campaign, especially in the most vulnerable population, to anticipate a possible new wave of infections, which is increasing in Europe and indicates a new wave of the pandemic.

The United States authorized updated anticovid booster vaccines for children up to 5 years old, seeking to extend protection before winter.

And Chinese state media indicated that the country will not relax its strict policy zero covid, according to various publications and an editorial that promised not to give up the controls, on the eve of the Communist Party Congress. The balance of the pandemic is 6 million 561 thousand 991 deaths and 623 million 5 thousand 615 infections, according to Johns Hopkins University.
