Project that creates a district and three townships in Bocas del Toro is approved in the third debate

The plenary session of the National Assembly This Thursday, in the third debate, it approved Bill 796, which creates the special ecotourism district of Bastimentos and the Bahía Honda, Quebrada de Sal and Solarte districts in Bocas del Toro.

A total of 38 deputies voted in favor, four against and one abstained.

The proposal, presented by Rupilio Ábrego, substitute deputy for Benicio Robinson, explained that Bastimentos is segregated from the district of Bocas del Toro. Meanwhile, Bahía Honda, Quebrada de Sal and Solarte in Bocas del Toro are segregated from the Bastimentos corregimiento.

“All technical reports were met. The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) concluded with the feasibility of the project”, Ábrego said.

For her part, Mayín Correa said that she abstained from voting after considering that the creation of these districts will not solve the problems of the Bocatoreños. “In a single period, 12 districts have been created (in Bocas). That is not right, this is cheap politics,” he said.

Currently, the island of Bastimentos is a corregimiento and according to estimates by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC), in 2020 it had a population of 2,679 people.
