The ban on opening new medical courses in Brazil, which has been in effect since 2018, will be closed as of this Wednesday (5). This information was provided by the Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, who stated that the measure had the opposite effect to that intended, since it ended up being overcome by court decisions.
“There was a moratorium ordinance in 2018, with the aim of suspending the expansion of medical vacancies and courses in Brazil. What happened from 2018 to now? It was the period that created the most vacancies in medicine in Brazil. thousand vacancies, from [faculdades] private, to 158 thousand. It was an increase of almost 50,000 vacancies, and we have 225 lawsuits to be defined”, he said in an interview with journalists.
The ban on new medical courses was defined by an ordinance of the Ministry of Education (MEC) in April 2018, valid for 5 years, as a way to control the quality of new courses opened in the country.
Now, according to Camilo Santana, the government is studying a new rule, which includes the release of notices or authorization models for new courses that take into account regional criteria, such as the low presence of doctors, for example. The text should be discussed with the Ministry of Health.
