Professional associations, academics and mayors of Piura request to restore governance and combat insecurity

Representatives of the business sector, academics and mayors of Piura agree that the change of leadership in the Government will not solve the institutional crisis by itself, and that the challenge of Jerí will be to rebuild citizen trust and restore order to the country.

Mateo Gómez, president of the Chamber of Commerce and Production of Piura, stated that the constitutional succession opens an opportunity to “correct course” and promote a responsible transitional government.

“The country requires firm decisions to return security to the population, predictability to the economy and hope to the citizen,” he said. In addition, he urged Congress to abandon partisan interests and act responsibly.

From the University of Piura, Dr. Guillermo Chang maintained that the vacancy does not represent a rupture of the democratic order, but rather the application of a mechanism provided for in the Constitution.

“The new government must restore governability and end the presidential term with transparency and stability,” he said.

Among the main challenges, he mentioned the fight against crime and the organization of clean elections.

Local governments also made their voices heard. The provincial mayors of Piura, Sullana and Talara requested that the Armed Forces patrol the streets due to the increase in citizen insecurity. Likewise, they asked to accelerate security projects and articulate political efforts to confront the crisis.

“He (Jerí) has to focus on making a calm transition of command, ensuring that the elections go well and fundamentally betting on the issue of insecurity. I would even say, taking clear actions to take the Armed Forces to the streets, to patrol, to be able to control this situation that is adverse to citizens throughout the country and what has happened in Lima, does not escape what is happening here in Piura, Tumbes, Chiclayo and other cities,” indicated the mayor of Piura, Gabriel Madrid.

He said that Dina Boluarte’s situation was unsustainable and he hopes that the Ministry of the Interior will now do its job. “(…) Everyone in the State has to fulfill their role and here the one that has to fulfill their role is the Ministry of the Interior, which is not being responsible,” he added.

For his part, the mayor of Sullana, Marlem Mogollón, indicated that, although it is true, the marches were held asking for Boluarte’s vacancy, “it was also heard that everyone was leaving. But since we are in a representative democracy, it is Parliament that has decided to vacate the president,” said the authority.

Meanwhile, the mayor of the province of Talara, Juan Zárate, asked that “in these 6 months, make a consensus with the political forces, take the best cadres and help us get out of this crisis. It is time for us all to come together to move the country forward.”
