Uruguay receives the Latin American Poultry Congress in Punta del Este for the first time
“It is a sector of opportunities, where, furthermore, family production is not the opposite of industrial production,” said the President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, at the 28th Latin American Poultry Congress, Ovum 2024. The event, which developed for the first time in Uruguay, it is organized by the Latin American Poultry Association (ALA) and brings together the most important companies in the poultry sector for three days.
The congress began on Tuesday the 12th and runs until today, Friday, November 15 at the Punta del Este Convention Center. Yesterday, Thursday the 14th, Lacalle Pou attended the event accompanied by the Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries, Fernando Mattos; the undersecretary of that portfolio, Ignacio Buffa; and the president of the ALA, Joaquín Fernández, among other authorities linked to poultry activity.
In the speech, the president highlighted the evolution of the poultry sector in terms of the relationship in the poultry chain. “It was not a simple relationship,” he noted. In that sense, he valued the joint work between all those involved to understand that this chain had to be sustainable from beginning to end.
He also made reference to traceability, safety and quality of food, linked to innovation and technology. He also highlighted cooperation between all producers as a way to improve competitiveness.
The poultry sector plays an important role both in national production and at the export level. “I appreciate that they taught me,” he said. He considered that it is very difficult to understand this economic activity if one does not know it, which is why he especially valued the efforts of the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Livestock in search of new markets to carry Uruguayan production.
«A sector that worked very professionally in all areas. (…) it is a sector of opportunities, where family production is not opposed to industrial production,” he indicated. For Lacalle Pou, the registered trademark of poultry farming in Uruguay should be a letter of introduction to reach new markets.
The Ovum 2024 congress brings together the main genetics producers, laboratories, food, machinery and equipment manufacturers, and business advisors in the poultry sector every two years. The event aims to promote the development of poultry farming in Latin America and the Caribbean, and worldwide. It is organized by the ALA, founded on April 23, 1970, and integrated, in addition to Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Mexico.
