The World Health Organization (WHO) reported low vaccination coverage and virus outbreaks in several countries in the region.
Considering the decreased coverage of the first and second doses of measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, and the occurrence of measles cases in countries of the Region, the WHO activated an epidemiological alert for measles.
The WHO report details that in Argentina, between EW 1 and EW 52 of 2022, reported 9,205 suspected measles cases, of which 2 were confirmed by laboratory, one imported and one case with unknown probable place of infection.

In Brazilbetween EW 1 and EW 52 of 2022, reported 3,217 suspected cases, of which 41 (1.3%) were confirmed, 3,061 (95.2%) were ruled out, and 115 (3.6%) are still under investigation. During the same period, no deaths were recorded.
Between SE 1 and SE 2 of 2023, 21 suspected cases were reported, of which 5 (23.8%) were discarded and 16 (76.2%) are still under investigation. During the same period, there were no confirmed cases and deaths.
In Canada, between EW 1 and EW 52 of 2022, 3 confirmed cases of imported measles were reported, reported by the provinces of Ontario (1 case) and Quebec (2 cases). In 2022, genotyping performed on samples from 2 cases identified the B3 genotype.
In Ecuador, Between EW 1 and EW 52 of 2022, 445 suspected measles cases were reported, of which 1 was laboratory confirmed, the probable site of infection is unknown for the confirmed case.
In USAbetween January 1, 2022 and January 19, 2023, were notified 121 confirmed measles cases in 6 jurisdictions. Of which 118 were imported. The B3 genotype was identified in imported cases.

In Paraguayan, between EW 1 and EW 52 of 2022, reported 660 suspected measles/rubella cases (integrated surveillance), of which one was laboratory confirmed for measles in January 2023, the probable site of infection of the case is unknown.
The cConfirmed case had rash onset on September 15, 2022 and corresponds to a 1-year-old boy, residing in the department of Itapúa (near the border with Argentina), with a history of vaccination and no travel history.
