Pro Consumer assures chicken price will drop

As of next week, the population could be receiving the pound of chicken close to 70 pesos, according to the executive director of the National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights (Pro Consumer), Eddy Alcántara.

He said that the Government has subsidized the Dominican poultry sector, apart from the fact that raw materials for raising white meat have decreased. In addition, he pointed out that the dollar is at an affordable price, there is no shortage, and fuel prices are stabilized.

“A decrease must be reflected with the recommendations that we made to the president at the price table three weeks ago, starting next week, when the authorized import and the one that the Government itself is going to make arrive in the Dominican Republic,” indicated to Free Journal.

He added that at the moment when imports are not yet on the market, the pound of beef chicken “It is stabilized and in some cases it has decreased.”

“We have had to intervene to verify that speculation is not being used, although we cannot sanction for price speculation, because there is no price control here, but we can act accordingly when we can detect speculation from the point of view commercial and financial”, he pointed out.

He said that Pro Consumidor is permanently going to the country’s farms, verifying that the effect that President Luis Abinader wants to achieve with the subsidy he delivered four weeks ago is achieved, until the importation occurs or a significant decrease in the price of the meat of chicken.

“I have risked saying that it will be within the barrier of 70 pesos per pound of beef. chicken and Pro Consumidor will be vigilant that these imports reach the Dominican Republic,” said Alcántara.

Until now, the amount of white meat that the Government is going to import is unknown and, furthermore, if these imports are within the zero-rate law, which exempts 67 food subheadings from paying tariffs, including chicken.

Last May, the Government announced that it will allocate 700 million pesos for the next four months, with the intention of stabilizing the prices of chickenwhich from August 2021 to May 2022 has presented a relative variation of 35%.
