PRM presidential candidates remain silent in the face of crisis and attacks by opponents of Abinader’s Government

Aspirantes presidenciales del PRM guardan silencio ante crisis y ataques opositores al Gobierno de Abinader

The majority of the presidential candidates of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) have remained silent and have not come out in defense of President Luis Abinader and the Government at crucial moments, where the opposition and sectors have intensified their attacks.

On thorny issues such as “blackout”, salary indexation, discussion of the Labor Code, the exclusion of three judges from the Supreme Court of Justice by the National Council of the Judiciary (CNM), the increase in food and others, these leaders are absent.

Of the nine who aspire to the presidential nomination of the ruling party, only the vice president Raquel Peña, the director of Customs, Eduardo Sanz Lovatón and the president of the board of directors of the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel), Guido Gómez Mazara, have come forward in defense of their Government.

However, the Minister of Tourism, David Collado, and the mayor of the National District, Carolina Mejía, who lead in the internal polls to be a candidate for 2028, have been conspicuous by their absence, fleeing like the “devil from the cross” from vital criticism from the authorities.

The senator of the People’s Force (FP), Omar Fernández, has been requesting to apply salary indexation for inflation, as established by the Tax Code, a proposal that has received support from the business and union sectors, meeting with the rejection of Yayo Sanz Lovatón.

The general blackout on Tuesday was immediately taken advantage of by former president Leonel Fernández, leader of the FP, calling it an “unspeakable oversight.”

Regarding the lack of operation of the Metro due to the energy interruption, the former president assured that it was due to lack of maintenance in the emergency electrical systems.

After an evaluation process, the CNM three judges of the Supreme Court of Justice were left out, including Pilar Jiménez Ortíz, who has denounced alleged arbitrariness and political bias in the process to which they were subjected.

PRM

In addition to Peña, Collado and Mejía, in the PRM they are trying to win the presidential medal: Wellington Arnaud, director of Inapa, Tony Peña Guaba, director of the Social Cabinet, Víctor D’Aza, president of the Dominican Municipal League (LMD) and Roberto Fulcar, former Minister of Education.

Reform

When the tax reform was submitted last year, these candidates, as now, opted for silence, while attacks from the opposition and social groups increased.

When it was withdrawn from the National Congress, all of them showed their agreement with the presidential initiative.
