The Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) will reach an agreement with the legislators of that political organization on the divergent aspects of the constitutional reform project that is currently in the Senate of the Republic.
In offering the information, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco, warned that once the party achieves consensus among its forces, it will be “rigid with party discipline.”
“We are receiving opinions and we are going to finish reaching a consensus on some aspects on which we are not yet fully in agreement. As the party president (José Ignacio Paliza) said, in general terms the PRM supports the reforms,” he said.
The official leader, who acknowledged the variety of opinions that the congressmen of that political entity have with some points of the reform, explained that there is divergence on the issue of the unification of the elections – on this there are many versions-; the two-year immobility of the Attorney General of the Republic; and the reduction of the membership of deputies.
“Once the PRM makes its final decisions, it is obligatory, especially its legislators, to abide by the guidelines drawn up by the party, as we have always done, but obviously we will be there, and yesterday (last Wednesday) we began a good discussion process that will allow us to internalize these important reforms and even make proposals,” he explained.
He said that when they reach an agreement, they will act in a monolithic manner and unified in the agreed purposes.
The formation of a bicameral commission will be concluded next Monday
The Chamber of Deputies will complete the bicameral commission that will study the bill during the extraordinary session called for next Monday at 2:00 p.m., according to the veteran congressman. The comment is made in the context of the fact that the Upper House has already appointed the senators that will make up the committee, which will be chaired by Pedro Catrain.
There will be consultations; the process will be smooth
Pacheco assured that Congress will consult on the proposed amendment to the Magna Carta. He said that they will conduct the process “smoothly, so that no one claims that we were hasty or that it was rushed.”
The constitutional reform project seeks to guarantee the constitutional stability of the presidential election rules; strengthen the constitutional autonomy of the Public Prosecutor’s Office; adjust the number of deputies; and unify the elections.

Political leaders and legislators from the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP) and the Liberación Dominicana (PLD) parties yesterday reiterated their rejection of the bill that declares the need for constitutional reform and calls for the National Revisory Assembly to consider several modifications to the Magna Carta.
