Prisoners Defenders: This August police violence in Cuba was as brutal as 9/11

Madrid Spain.- The non-governmental organization Prisoners Defenders (PD) registered 43 cases of new political prisoners in Cuba during the month of August, bringing the total to 1,016.

Of these 1,016 prisoners, 743 are Convicts of Conscience, 242 Convicted of Conscience and 31 fall into the category of Other Political Prisoners, Prisoners Defenders denounced in its monthly report.

Among them are 36 children (26 serving sentences and 10 being prosecuted). And at least 120 women (including those of the trans gender) continue with political and conscientious orders and sentences, the document specifies.

The 43 new prisoners were arrested as a result of the massive repression caused mainly by the demonstrations that have taken place in numerous provinces of the country this August. In his report, published this Thursday, PD points out that police violence was once again as brutal as that unleashed during the protests on July 11 and 12 (11J) last year.

“The repressive apparatus has stressed its structures to enormously increase its capacity for terror, which it now maintains at the national level with colossal expenses for a government that, while developing this colossal investment in repression, does not provide energy, food, hygiene products. , medicines or adequate medical attention to any of the citizens, except those in the structures of power and/or repression”, condemns the organization.

This repression, together with the economic crisis, has unleashed a mass exodus with record numbers, the text points out.

Prisoners Defenders also explains that the repression against the citizens of Nuevitas, Camalote, or Baracoa are not isolated events, but “respond to a new Unit of Counter-Intelligence Services created with dozens of people who study from Havana any possible manifestation and they have a national coordination that would send forces to each affected area in real time, with orders to use violence without limits to stop the demonstrations and lead to prison, without consequences for any of the agents, officials or civilians who participate in these operations. ”.

According to the data collected by PD, from September 1, 2021 to August 31, 2022, a total of 1,253 political prisoners have suffered political imprisonment in Cuba; and, “as the detailed study of 101 random cases reported by Prisoners Defenders to the United Nations Committee Against Torture (CAT) showed, all of them are tortured”.
