The increase in the prison population is due to different factors, most of them complex, which make it difficult to clear prisons.

The rate of growth of the prison population doubled in the last year.

Statistics from the General Directorate of the Penitentiary System (DGSP) establish that between 2018 and 2020, the average annual growth of the prison population was 5.4%. However, there was an increase in the number of inmates of 11% between 2021 and 2022.

As of June 2022, the number of detainees was 20,798. Although the system only has the capacity to house 14,591 inmates, the prison population went from 18,728 in 2021 to 20,798 in 2022.
