The Cuban Foreign Ministry highlighted the importance of the commitment of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) to peace in the face of the next summit of this association with the European Union (EU) in the midst of the US military deployment in the Caribbean Sea.
In a meeting prior to the summit on November 9 and 10 in Santa Marta (Colombia), the Cuban vice chancellor and national coordinator before CELAC, Anayansi Rodríguez, assured that the maintenance of the “Zone of Peace” in the region is of “vital importance,” according to a release of the Cuban Foreign Ministry.

Rodríguez also highlighted in his speech the rejection of “unilateral coercive measures” and his defense of South-South cooperation.
He also stressed Cuba’s commitment to a summit that reflects the “shared visions of both regions” on topics of interest on the current international agenda and the future of bi-regional relations.
US troops in the Caribbean
In recent weeks, the United States has attacked and sunk 16 vessels in international waters in the Pacific and the Caribbean, linking them to drug trafficking, according to reports EFE.
Last week, President Donald Trump assured that he did not rule out attacks on ground targets in Venezuela and Colombia, always related to drug trafficking, and added that if these maneuvers were carried out, he would notify Congress.
The “Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace” was signed by the heads of State and Government of CELAC, at the end of the Summit held in Havana in January 2014.

With this document, the 33 countries of the integration mechanism assumed a permanent commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes, with the objective of banishing the use or threat of force in the region.
Now, the note from the Cuban Foreign Ministry considers that the XIX Meeting of National Coordinators is a “key” space to advance in the negotiation of the documents that will be presented during the Summit.
Since last April, Colombian President Gustavo Petro has held the “pro tempore” presidency of CELAC, with an agenda focused on regional unity and global cooperation.
