Printing of the future: Hiperdata reveals how 3D printers work

3D printing has made it possible to make all kinds of creations a reality that benefit thousands of people around the world.

The most recent episode of the video podcast Hyperdata took Andrea Cardona and Cristian Serrano, outside the studio to visit the facilities of Arrow IT 3Da Colombian company that is a pioneer in the use and development of 3D printing technologies.

During the tour, Edwin Rincón, the company’s electronic engineer, explained in detail how this revolutionary technology works, the materials it uses and its environmental impact.

What is 3D printing and how does it work?

3D printing is an additive manufacturing process that allows you to create three-dimensional objects from digital models. This method works by superimposing layers of material, which merge to shape the previously programmed design.

  1. digital design: It all starts with a CAD (computer-aided design) file, which can be created from scratch or downloaded from online libraries.
  2. Model preparation: the design is processed with slicing software (slicer), which divides the model into layers and generates the necessary instructions for the printer.
  3. Layer by layer printing– 3D printers use different technologies (such as FDM, SLA or SLS) to deposit material layer by layer, following the instructions in the file.
  4. Finish– After printing is complete, the object may require additional cleaning or treatments to improve its appearance or functionality.

Types of printers and materials

Edwin Rincón explained that there are various types of 3D printers, such as those of fused filament (FDM)which are popular for their accessibility, and stereolithography (SLA), known for their precision. The most Common ones include plastics like PLA and ABSbut resins, metals, and advanced compounds such as carbon fiber are also used.

Amazing and sustainable prints

Among the notable applications of 3D printing, Arrow TI 3D has worked on the creation of medical prostheses, architectural models, parts for the automotive industry and even decorative art. Additionally, Rincón highlighted how this technology can contribute to sustainability by reducing material waste and encouraging reuse.

One of the most relevant topics addressed was the environmental impact. Although the 3D printing is considered a more sustainable technology than traditional manufacturing methodsRincón pointed out the importance of using biodegradable materials and recycling plastic waste generated during the process.

Colombian innovation at the service of the world
