Study reveals reasons why young people emigrate
The reasons that motivate Dominican youth to migrate to other countries are the lack of work, security and guarantees of rights, such as health and quality education.
The study “Migratory movements in the Dominican Republic: their impact on young people” carried out by researchers from the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) shows the motivations of young people between 17 and 24 years, of Dominicans who emigrate to other countries; and of Haitians and Venezuelans who decide to live in the Dominican Republic.
The investigation reveals that Dominicans emigrate in search of greater job and study opportunities, and that upon arrival in the country of destination (mainly the United States and Europe) they are guaranteed fundamental rights.
“Young people (Dominicans) have no intention of returning to the country. And the reasons they give are the same reasons they left: ‘there is no work’, ‘there is no security’, ‘there is no guarantee of rights’”, explains the investigation. Among young Haitians and Venezuelans, the three main reasons for migrating are the economic situation of their countries, the search for better opportunities, and family reunification.
